A 7-year-old NM Maltese mixed breed dog was presented for evaluation of severe hematuria. The only abnormality on urinalysis was hematuria.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Mineralizing, prostatic mass. This is strongly suggestive for carcinoma.

Image Interpretation

The prostate in this patient was enlarged and measured 2.24 cm with a pericapsular, hyperechoic and inflammatory pattern. Focal areas of mineralization were noted, and there appeared to be abscessation within the prostatic mass.

DX

Cytology of the prostate revealed transitional cell carcinoma.

Outcome

No further outcome at this time.

Comments

Guarded to poor prognosis. A combination of enrofloxacin and Deramaxx could be considered as a palliative measure.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Hematuria – bladder pathology (neoplasia, urolith, cystitis), prostatic neoplasia, renal pathology (neoplasia, renolith).

Sampling

U/S guided FNAs were performed, and it was found that the area of apparent abscessation was solid tissue, which is most consistent with carcinoma. Cytology of the prostate revealed transitional cell carcinoma.
