Case Study

06_00339 Stella A Ectopic ureter

A 13-month-old female Labradoodle was presented for evaluation of recurrent urinary tract infections and urinary incontinence. The only abnormality on physical examination was that the vaginal vestibule appeared wet.

DX

Ectopic ureter

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Left ectopic ureter appears to enter into the pelvic urethra. Further imaging would be necessary to define its destination. However, surgical intervention would be recommended either through endoscopy and laser ablation or traditional surgical means.

Image Interpretation

The urinary bladder, trigone and pelvic urethra presented normal wall thicknesses with anechoic urine and normal tone. No uroliths or sediment were visualized. No evidence of inflammatory or neoplastic changes were noted. Ectopic ureter was noted and measured 0.5 cm at its maximum width. The ureter was contractile and appeared to bypass the left ureteral papilla. The right ureteral papilla appeared to be normal.
The kidneys were uniform and measured 4.0 cm.
