Adequan for Treatment of Sterile Cystitis in Cats?

Adequan for Treatment of Sterile Cystitis in Cats?

I was just looking through the SonoPath clinical search engine and found a case in which the doctor used Adequan to treat the inflamed bladder in cats with chronic sterile cystitis.

Does anyone use this in their practice and have you seen it benefit your patients?

I haven’t used Adequan for
I haven’t used Adequan for this purpose, but I have treated many many cats with interstitial cystitis with Cartrophen and the majority of cats have done well with it. They stopped urinating around the house. When they’d have a flare up, we’d repeat the cycle.

Was checking out Cartrophen
Was checking out Cartrophen and it is not available in the States as of yet, Adequan was noted as a similar-type drug to that of Cartrophen. Hopefully it will hit the States soon as another option for arthritis and sterile cystitis in cats! 🙂

Part of the proposed
Part of the proposed pathogenesis of feline interstitial/idiopathic/sterile cystitis is that the glycosaminoglycan layer on the bladder uro-epithelium is defective, allowing urine constituents to come in contact within the submucosa of the bladder and triggering inflammation. Therefore the rationale behind the use of drugs such as Adequan is that it improves the glycosaminoglycan layer within the bladder. Anecdotal evidence seems to support the use of glycosaminoglycan in the therapy.

I use quite a bit of
I use quite a bit of glucosamine in cats with idiopathic cystitis, and I think it mostly helps the owner and vet feel like they are doing something (besides increasing water intake). I think the studies out there have not shown good evidence for it, but I use it in lieu of prescribing antibiotics.
