A 3-year-old NM Standard Poodle with a history of acute onset vomiting that had resolved and was doing well, was presented for evaluation of a wire in peritoneal cavity, which was seen incidentally on survey radiographs. CBC and serum biochemistry were within normal limits.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Linear foreign structure, consistent with metal, in the caudal abdomen impinging on the body wall. Otherwise, normal abdomen. There was no structural evidence of disease that caused the vomiting. Surgical intervention for the wire removal is recommended guided by intraoperative ultrasound if necessary.

Image Interpretation

The right caudal abdomen revealed a hyperechoic linear structure which measured approximately 1.0 cm in length. This is consistent with the wire noticed on radiographs. The wire appeared to be impinging on the body wall with deviation of the body wall. No regional inflammation was noted associated with the foreign structure.
