Abdominal pain in a 5 yr old MN Doberman 2 weeks post gastropexy

  • 5 year old MN Doberman presented for acute onset abdominal pain 2 weeks post castration and elective gastropexy.
  • PE showed possible SQ/abdominal swelling at the gastropexy site, caudal to the last rib on the right side.
  • CBC is wnl and the patient is afebrile.

    • Abdominal US shows some nodular, reactive fat ventral to the mid-liver.  The pexy site located on the right side at the level of the last rib/subcostal region appears normal with no visible inflammation or effusions.  There are a couple of small polyps in the urinary bladder.  Otherwise, the rest of the abdominal exam is unremarkable.
    • I rarely scan dogs post elective gastro-pexy.  What complications should I be looking for 2 weeks post-op?  I am attaching images of the gastropexy site and also of the reactive fat ventral to the liver.   What are my rule outs for this reactive fat?  Suture reaction? Pancreatitis?  Any reason for this change to suggest pexy failure or complication?
    • Thank you all for your help.  This dog was large, deep chested, very tense, and not shaved well so please excuse the decreased image detail.
