Hello,
– I have had two cases in the past few weeks of sustained (15 minutes approx) of ventricular tachycardia (HR 200) following sedation.
– One young adult and one middle aged adult, both Labradors, that were given 0.02mg/kg medetomodine with 0.1mg/kg butorphanol im for sedation for orthopaedic radiographs.
– Both normalised to a sinus bradycardia following reversal from sedation.
– The middle aged dog had a high proBNP test (2056) and normal troponin I, and a normal echocardiogram, no Holter.

– I was just wondering if this something that other people are seeing and is just related to sedation?

Not seen this with sedation. With medetomodine should get reflex bradycardia (secondary to its transient hypertensive effect) rather than tachycardia.

No, I completely agree with Eric. I haven’t seen this with alpha-2-agonists. A short term vtach at a rate of 200 is not really life-threatening but I would strictly recommend a holter recording. What was the reason for the sedation? Do these dogs have any systemic disease? I would recommend an abd scan and Holter.

Thank you. They were sedated for radiographs, not sick dogs. I will follow through with that.
