Ultrasound Education

I was wondering is there is anyone familiar with the the University of Sydney distance education course on sonology? I have been on a waiting list for 2 years and they have offered me a spot. The course involves sending in studies as well as other assignments. I think it takes about 1 year to complete and there is two scanning sessions included although not mandatory (good excuse to travel to Australia however).

Dear Jaquie, the course is
Dear Jaquie, the course is good for beginners, some of the chapters are based on article readings only, some others have proper notes.
You need to have at least a year of experience using your us machine and have one for doing your assays.
People that has done it has mentioned that been a distance education course makes it hard to learn things properly as there is no one with you to explain how to get your images. But when they evaluate the images you submit on the assays they give you good feedback. (The images are submitted in printed paper and you have a due date for submit). I had the opportunity to see few of the workshops. They are held in Melbourne, you usually are 4 vets per us machine, they provide my lab 30 gold us machines or you can take your own one. And they spend time with you doing basic scanning plus some lectures previous to the workshop.
I can put you in contact with one of my clients who is doing it at the moment and she can tell you more of her experience.
The instructors are well known radiologists in Australia (excellent radiologists). But I don’t know if traveling to Australia for one day of workshop at a time is worth it for you (means 2 or 3 trips for one session at a time in a year)
Hope this helps and let me know if you need to contact the vet I mentioned.
Regards
Veronica

Thanks Veronica
That was very helpful! The course looks excellent for someone just starting out. I was able to contact one of the instructors and have decided that it may be a little too basic for me where I am at right now.

I would love to hear what the
I would love to hear what the community has to say regarding what is needed in ultrasound education and what everyone thinks would be utilized to ensure that such an investment on sonopath’s part would have legs. We have some things under development to come in the next few months but you could surely help refine our ideas.
We are looking to help plug holes that aren’t filled by the usual scan labs and courses..

Obviously virtual education is the easiest for user and for us but on site ideas as well.

Everything we have done in sonopath has been based on needs and requests and innovative ideas and this is no different.

Ideas?

I love would love to see a type of “shadowing” program where you could travel with a mobile sonographer or attend a clinic with a very busy ultrasound case load in order to get more real life experience. Something like an ultrasound internship.

Thx for the input… with someone at your level I am a big believer in refining the game as opposed to formal courses as you can cut to the chase quickly and not waste time in an hour lecture looking for a couple of tidbits unless its new research and so forth. Lets talk more about this in Jackson at IVUSS in October as I have a couple of ideas for you.

yes we can and will do more of this stay tuned:)

Internship will be great!
Internship will be great! More hands on, Jaqui’s idea is great, I have done ultrasounds for a while and learn it at uni on a postgrad course, but the reality is that I still find lots of gaps that even with the years havent been filled, because I haven’t had the chance to go and “shadow” someone else doing them. The forum has been great for this, but there is nothing better than seen cases and cases. Even rotations with the best sonographers (in the real world) the everyday ultrasounds.
Also practice on interventional sonography should be part of it!
Would you accept overseas “shadowers” ? hehehehe
