Pleural effusion

Sonopath Forum

– 9 year old Golden Retriever referred for pleural effusion

– History of cough 3 weeks prior that responded to doxycycline and prednisolone

– Represented as emergency collapsed with large volume pleural effusion

– Cardiac chamber size and function normal on echo. Mild/insignificant aortic insufficiency.

– Abnormal tissue at right heart base, I think it is lung but cannot separate from heart base

– Irregular contour with hyperechoic speckles within – could this be an abscess or mineralised tumour? And if mass/tumour, extending from heart or lung? Also concerned about thickening at right atrial and right ventricular border, is this just fat?

– Pleural effusion was haemorrhagic and cloudy, not malodorous, sent for analysis.

– No abdominal effusion, spleen normal.

Lung tumor likley sarcoma but

Lung tumor likley sarcoma but lung lobe torsion possible especially if the fluid is frankly hemorrhagic. Screen the abdomen for primary neoplasia, tap the chest for comfort and cytospin and slide prep for exfoliating sarcoma or carcinoma cells, CT or thoracotomy if no neoplasia.

Thank you. I have attached x-rays post fluid drainage to a new post. I am not sure if there is a lung lobe torsion. Thanks again for your help.
