Hypothyroidism causing aggression in dog?

  • A six-year-old male neutered Airedale pitbull terrier mixed breed is having increasing aggression over the past three years.
  • The patient seems to be triggered by sound lightning and also has food aggression issues.
  • The dog has history of resolved mange but has had chronic skin issues as well.
  • Could the aggression be a thyroid issue or more likely just behavioral?

There are few reports on

There are few reports on aggression with hypothyroidism but it is not common. With the breeds involved behavioral issues would be more likley, however, that is a diagnosis of exclusion so it would be important to exclude endocrine/neurological disease/metobolic issues first. Skin issues are most likley incidental.

In my experience new

In my experience new aggression is very very often associated with pain somewhere… usually spine unless new social situation… backtracking to find the trigger point would be key.
