Case Study

Right ureteral mass in a 10 year old MN Pug with intermittent hematuria

This 10 year MN Pug dog presented for a 2 week history of intermittent hematuria. No improvement on Clavamox. No calculi on rads. Intermittent coughing for the last month.

CBC/Chem: BUN 37, Crea 1.8

U/A: WBCs and RBCs positive, cocci positive, culture negative

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

The urinary bladder presented a minor, uniform apical ventral wall thickening. This is
consistent with chronic cystitis with minor suspended and dependent debris. The pelvic
urethra was imaged 3.0 cm beyond the cystourethral junction. There was no evidence
of tumors noted. The left kidney revealed normal size and structure, corticomedullary definition and
ratio for this age patient. The cortex presented largely uniform texture with normal
echogenic relationship to liver and spleen. Medullary echogenicity differed distinctly
from that of the cortex and no evidence or dilation could be seen. The capsule was
acceptably uniform without dramatic irregularities. The left kidney measured 3.0 cm.
The right kidney presented polycystic changes with slight pyelectasia and minor, degenerative disease with hydronephrosis and hydroureter. The ureter was followed
caudally to a focal, 3.0 cm mass deriving from the ureter.

Right ureteral mass

Outcome

Right ureteral mass appears resectable with right nephrectomy and ureterectomy. The
left kidney was unremarkable. The ureteral mass appears to be separate from the
trigone.
