An 11-year-old neutered male Siberian Husky dog was presented for evaluation of hematuria that had been present for the past 10 days and was non-responsive to Amoxicillin.
An 11-year-old neutered male Siberian Husky dog was presented for evaluation of hematuria that had been present for the past 10 days and was non-responsive to Amoxicillin.
The changes seen on ultrasonographic examination are suspicious for hemangiosarcoma of the right kidney. An FNA of the cystic component and of the hyperechoic, irregular tissue of the right kidney should be obtained. This should be cytospun, and a slide preparation should be made and submitted for cytologic evaluation. A portion of fluid should also be held and submitted for culture and sensitivity to rule out a severe pyelonephritis. The patient should be treated with antibiotics pending the results of the cytology.
The right kidney was enlarged and irregular in contour. Hyperechoic, nodular changes were noted within the parenchyma of the right kidney. This is suggestive of clots. The right kidney also contains large cystic components, which are suspicious for a hemangiosarcoma.
The owner ultimately decided on euthanasia.
Hematuria – bladder pathology (urolith, neoplasia, resistant bacterial cystitis), urethral pathology (urolith, neoplasia, granulomatous urethritis), prostatic neoplasia, renal pathology (renolith, neoplasia, pyelonephritis, hypertension, glomerulonephritis).
Biopsy of the right kidney revealed tubular adenocarcinoma.
