Renal neoplasia in a 6 year old MN Pit Bull Terrier

A 6-year-old MN Pit Bull Terrier was presented for PU/PD and decreased appetite. Moderate weight loss was present on physical examination. The only abnormality on urinalysis was isosthenuria. UPC, CBC, serum biochemistry, and bile acids were all within normal limits.

DX

Renal neoplasia

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Renal neoplasia, possibly an embolic pattern, likely round cell neoplasia. Immediate chemotherapeutic protocol would be warranted after cytology has been assessed.

Image Interpretation

The kidneys in this patient presented multiple, hypoechoic masses with an embolic type metastatic pattern. The largest mass in the left kidney measured 4 x 3.7 cm with loss of architecture. The right kidney presented multiple nodular changes with pyelectasia. Pyelectasia of the left kidney measured 1.17 cm.

Outcome

The patient was lost to follow up.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Isosthenuria – early chronic kidney disease, pyelonephritis, neoplasia, acute kidney disease, nephritis. Psychogenic polydypsia. Addison’s disease. Primary polydipsia – neurological disease, partial diabetes insipidus, medullary washout.
