RAD – Right elbow dysplasia with medial coronoid pathology in a 7 month old MN German Shepherd Dog

Case Study

RAD – Right elbow dysplasia with medial coronoid pathology in a 7 month old MN German Shepherd Dog

This 7 month old MN German Shepherd has a history of right front lameness of 1 month duration. Painful on extension of shoulder.

This 7 month old MN German Shepherd has a history of right front lameness of 1 month duration. Painful on extension of shoulder.

Image Interpretation

The cranial contour of the medial coronoid process (PCM) is blunt and obscured. Asymmetry of the humeroradial and humeroulnar joint space is noted with mild widening of the humeroulnar joint space. No arthritic changes are noted.  The caudal contour of the humeral head presents questionable mild flattening.

DX

Indirect evidence of right-sided elbow dysplasia in terms of medial coronoid pathology and mild elbow joint incongruity • Possible osteochondrosis of the right humeral head

Outcome

The lack of arthritic changes in the elbow joint is typical for this breed. A large proportion of GSDs present hardly any evidence of DJD along with medial coronoid pathology – especially at this relatively young age of presentation. CT and arthroscopy (arthrotomy) of the right elbow is recommended. Consider radiographic examination of the left elbow as well as the pathology typically
appears bilaterally even if subclinical.
