Malignant histiocytosis of the spleen, liver, and lymph nodes, diagnosed on FNA, in a 8 year old MN Bernese Mountain Dog.

An 8-year-old NM Bernese Mountain Dog was presented for evaluation of possible splenic disease. Laboratory testing was within normal limits.

Malignant histiocytosis

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Multicentric neoplasia of lymphatic origin was suspected, and appeared to involve the medial iliac lymph nodes, spleen and liver.

Image Interpretation

The spleen presented multiple, hypoechoic, target type masses. These lesions were expanding upon the capsule. Similar, hypoechoic nodular changes were noted throughout the liver. Enlarged, round, echopoor medial iliac lymph nodes were seen.

No further outcome at this time.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Splenic disease – neoplasia (hemangioma/hemangiosarcoma/sarcoma), torsion, hypersplenism, congestion, infectious splenitis (bacterial/fungal/protozoal), infarction, malignant histiocytosis.

Sampling

U/S guided FNAs were performed. Cytology revealed histiocytic malignant tumor of the spleen and liver.
