Case Study

CYT – pyogranulomatous inflammation with secondary hemorrhage confirmed with FNA/cytology in a 10 year old MN German Shepherd dog

This 10 year old MN German Shepherd Dog was presented with a mass on the right thoracic wall, enlarging. Mass is firm, broad base, barely moveable.

Image Interpretation

Submitted are excellent images of nucleated cells interspersed with erythrocytes. The majority of the nucleated
cells are neutrophils with rare lymphocytes. The large irregular cells that were concentrated on are characteristic
macrophages with a foamy cytoplasm. The nuclear characteristics are varied in these cells. Malignant
characteristics were not identified

pyogranulomatous inflammation with secondary hemorrhage

Outcome

This collection is a characteristic collection of inflammatory cells with large numbers of neutrophils and scattered
macrophages. This collection supports an inflammatory process with degenerate debris and inflammation. There is
a possibility of an injection site granuloma but this could be from trauma and a seroma alone. Bacteria were not
identified. There is no suggestion of neoplasia. Excision of the mass may be required to identify the process but in
this collection inflammation is the major reaction. A concern would be that this could be a central area of necrosis
within a neoplastic process.
