CYT – inflammatory cell pattern in caudal leg mass confirmed by FNA/cytology in a 10 year old MN dog

This 10 year old canione has a history of lipoma-like mass that appeared suddenly accompanied by fever and lameness. Excised 2 weeks ago, recovered well from surgery but seroma formed which has not completely regressed with warm compresses, antibiotics and NSAID. Image Interpretation

Observations:
The images demonstrate moderate numbers of erythrocytes with very few nucleated cells. There is debris that could be necrotic material. Soft tissue sarcoma cells or lipoma tissue is not identified. The cells present include neutrophils and macrophages.

DX

Minimal numbers of cells supporting inflammation.

Outcome

Comments:
The majority of the cells in the collection are erythrocytes. This could suggest hemorrhage, hematoma or some other nonspecific collection. There is no suggestion of malignancy. Soft tissue sarcoma is not identified. This reaction is not specific. Continued treatment for inflammation and swelling and possible biopsy can be suggested.

Sampling

tele cytology of the mass on leg
