Case Study

06_00332 Teddy Bear M Bladder mass

An 11-year-old NM Shih Tzu was presented for evaluation of hematuria and an abnormal bladder noted while attempted cystocentesis for urine collection. Physical examination, rectal palpation, and CBC were all normal. Elevated ALP (1372) and hypercalcemia was present on serum biochemistry.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Caudal bladder mass – highly vascular, nonresectable kissing lesion type presentation. Strongly suspicious for transitional cell carcinoma.

Serial blood pressures are recommended. Debulking through laser ablation could be considered in this patient. Eventual urethral stent plus or minus ureteral stents may be also applied in this patient if any evidence of obstructive disease develop

Image Interpretation

Urinary bladder in this patient presented a polypoid mass deriving from the dorsal caudal aspect of the bladder in the region of the trigone measured approximately 3 x 2 cm. The bladder mass was highly vascular; appeared to present a kissing lesion both dorsal and ventral; therefore not resectable. Pelvic urethra was structurally unremarkable as was the residual prostate measuring 0.5 cm. Focal areas of mineralization within the mass were noted.
