Best products for shelter cleaning?

I could use some advise and guidence. I have recently started working at a small SPCA, privately run with very little money, no surprise there! We do not at this time have an area to treat respiratory patients, so if they get ill they have to be euthanized. I’m trying my best to work up a better cleaning protocall, so my question is, what do you recommend for the cleaning of runs and cat cages? I’m trying to get a steam cleaning in for a complete once over but I need some thoughts about our day to day cleaning. Thanks for your input.

I think any quarternary

I think any quarternary ammonium compound would work well since they are effective against just about all the infectious viruses you are likely to encounter at the shelter. We use Parvoclear, and it can be used on table surfaces, is safe for cages including stainless steel, safe for most floors (won’t take off the wax) and also good for use in the runs – so you don’t need to carry different products. Just pay attention to the label for the proper dilution depending on what killing effectiveness you are looking for. And steam cleaning is a great idea – we use  a steam cleaning vacuum several times a week on our floors. Besides being effective in killing organisms (AAHA loves it), it leaves the floor fairly dry so it is safer for all. Of course, in your situation with respiratory infections, it’s really a shame you can’t keep the cats separate. Any way you could even use large carriers and keep these patients to one side of a room?

Thank you for your response,

Thank you for your response, I’m going to check into the Parvoclear tonight. We do have an isolation room for cats but there’s never enough room. Our surgery opens up this week, as long as that goes well we’ll be writing grants for a mini hospial and then I’ll be able to treat all the ill patients. One step at a time!!
