Addison’s disease in a 13 year old FS West Highland Terrier.

A 13-year-old FS West Highland Terrier dog was presented for being “not herself”. Physical examination and CBC were both within normal limits. The only abnormality on blood chemistry was elevated ALP activity. Low dose Dexamethasone suppression (LDDS) test showed a severely subnormal cortisol level that did not register.

Image Interpretation

There was a generalized, hyperechoic hepatomegaly with gallbladder sludge and mucous. The right adrenal gland was not seen. The left adrenal gland measured 0.56 x 0.36 x 1.69 cm.

Outcome

The patient was recommended for a urine culture and sensitivity with empirical urinary tract infection treatment for 4 weeks. Cortisone supplementation was advised due to breed predisposition, adrenal gland presentation, and subnormal cortisol values.

Comments

The patient was lost to follow up.
