A 17 year old spayed female DSH cat was presented for constipation, dehydration and lethargy. Abnormalities on physical examination were dehydration and generalized DJD. On abdominal palpation, movable stool and possible splenomegaly was noted. Leukocytosis was present on CBC. Serum biochemistry revealed hypoalbuminemia and hyperamylasemia. T4 was normal, but free T4 was elevated.

Intestinal stricture in a 17 year old FS DSH cat
Sonographic Differential Diagnosis
Peritoneal fluid could be due to inflammatory or neoplastic effusion. Traumatic stricture or neoplastia-associated stricture.
Image Interpretation
Mild to moderate amount of anechoic free peritoneal fluid. Annular intestinal or colonic mass in the mesenteric root region. Note the separation of echogenic luminal material into two distinct areas proximal and distal to the annular hypoechoic region of bowel.

Intestinal stricture
Outcome
A guarded prognosis was given. The owner opted to try palliative therapy only.
Clinical Differential Diagnosis
Splenomegaly – neoplasia, torsion, infection, congestion. Constipation – GIT disease (neoplasia, IBD, megacolon). Leukocytosis – peritonitis, inflammation. Hypoalbuminemia – hepatic dysfunction, PLE.
Sampling
None. Exploratory surgery was recommended.
