Doppler Gain

Sonopath Forum

I  just recently finished Dr Peter Modlers two dowloadable CE courses on Doppler. I highly recommend them. Easy viewing on a Saturday night when you have nothing else to do 🙂

In the first course there was a discussion on Doppler gain. In this section you note to adjust the Doppler gain so that there are a few “speckles” seen around the envelope curves. You also point out that velocities are different based on you gain settings.

My question-

Why would the gain settings effect the velocities?

Hi Randy!

Many thanks for

Hi Randy!

Many thanks for recommending the Doppler lecture 🙂 I’m happy that you liked it!!!!

Re your question, here’s the answer :

Because there is usually some “noise” closely around the curves. By increasing the gain, they can look like the curves (same intensity). By decreasing the gain, weak signals are not displayed but not all Doppler signals have the same signal intensity. I tried it on all of my 3 machines – you truely get different vmax (not much difference, but at least some, can be of importance, particulary when you do breeding exams and 0,1-0,3 m/s make a huge difference).

Thank you again and best regards!

Peter
