We recently lost a K9 patient to West Nile Virus. He began seizuring uncontrollably and went on emergency to a referral facility where he was stabilized to a degree. They then transferred him to a specialty care center for MRI, further diagnostics, etc, but died unexpectedly while receiving a Phenobarbital CRI in the CCU. Post-mortem findings were positive for West Nile. From what I can find it is not very common and when dogs do have it the symptoms are mild ataxia and not much else?? Our client and staff were shocked by his death and the apparent cause. Does anyone have experience with

I don’t recall it being a x-over to dogs but haven’t been up to date. Remo is a lot closer to the Nile than we are:)

Clinical canine west nile virus infection is extremely rare with only a handful of documented cases, however, with serological surveys the disease appears common but asymptomatic. In addition dogs generally only show mild viremia, which is too low to infect mosquitoes. develop. Clinically affected dogs develop encephalitis, myelitis, and myocarditis.
As the disease seems subclinical, it is unlikely that it will manifest as a new plague. Although with any viral disease mutations are possible.

Encephalitis can cause acute
Encephalitis can cause acute onset seizure activity without any prior clinical signs. How was the diagnosis confirmed? If possible could you post the post mortem results.
