- A 5-6 yr-old female feral DSH torti was presented for acting sick with very recent history of delivering kittens.
- This cat was normally unable to be handled, but now she was just too lethargic to “fight or flight”.
- Upon examination after some “kitty magic” was administered (love this combo), the patient was found to be pyrexic with a temperature of 103.2 degrees and had malodorous, bloody vulvar discharge present.
- Cursory ultrasound examination found a odd-shaped structure within the uterus. R/O uterine mass/ vs retained kitten.

- The patient underwent an OHE wherein one of the uterine horns was found to be dangerously close to perforating.
- The patient was spayed and the uterine horn was opened for further investigation.
The tissue contained in the horn was unidentifiable as a kitten or any type of definitive mass. It almost had the spongy consistency and feel of lung tissue? It was not “connected” to the uterine walls. Hard to describe. Has anyone seen this before? Is this just a kitten gone wrong or something else? The owners did want to pursue biopsies in this case.

With the history and
With the history and ultrasound findings the most likely aetiology would be a macerated fetus, rather than a tumor.

Yep mummification/maceration
Yep mummification/maceration is likely here. I think it won’t resorb after around 35 days gestation if not mistaken.
