Thickened GB wall

Sonopath Forum

This is Decker a 7 year old Beagle that presented recumbant. Slightly anemic and hypoproteinic with rest of blood being normal. Xrays showed poor serosal detail. US showed moderate fluid present. The fluid sample is the color of frank blood but no obvious source of bleeding could be identified. Sample does not clot.

The only other abnormality on US was a thickened GB wall that may be enhanced by the fluid. I am posting because previously someone indicated that a thickened GB wall could be a sign of a cuterbra and …..they were right. That was the only abnormal US finding for a very sick Shi Tzu and the Cuterbra eventually showed itself. I know this isn’t a cuterebra but I was wondering if any such “Pearl” exists for thickened GB wall with hemoabdomen. (Eyes are the windows to the soul”) I’m wondering if something similar exists for the GB. Currently running Coag to rule out clotting issues or rodenticide.

Thanks. Brent

Hi Brent

Anaphylaxis can present with a thickened GB and hemoabdomen. Also rule out pericardial effusion and possible RHF (take a peak in the chest).  Albumin needs to be quite low to cause effusion (<1.5). Pancreatitis and vasculitis also possible.

Thanks. Had a look at heart

Thanks. Had a look at heart and chest and they appear Normal.

Its a bit of a chronic hx. We still have no obvious reason for the hemoabdomen. Dog appears to be slowly procing clinically.

Thanks for the comments. Brent

As the gall bladder wall

As the gall bladder wall looks more edematous another possiblity would be infectious canine hepatitis.

Ok. Great thanks. Repeated US today and dog is clinically back to normal and 90% of fluid is resorbed! Only small amount seen at bladder!
