Pimobendan and congestive heart failure?

In cats or dogs is it contraindicated to treat a heart case with Pimobendan without an echocardiogram confirming congestive heart failure? In cases of financial constraints or ultrasound not available for an emergency patient?

Hi!

Dogs: if you have a typical mitral valve patient or DCM patient with the typical clinical signs and CHF proven on radiographs you can use Pimobendan without an echo (at least in my opinion) . Special cases like decompensated stenoses, Shunts, patients without CHF need a echo before the use of Pimobendan.

Cats: its not licensed for cats so I would be a bit cautious without echocardiogram.

BEst regards!
