Cats & Chronic Biliary disease

In my mobile practice I have had quite a run of biliary disease in cats (7 cases) in the last 2 months. Some with stones, others with sludgey CBD and/or GB, some with severe triaditis.

In this area, I have worked frequently with a feline practitioner who does a complimentary care approach, especially with nutritional support.  She has had remarkable results with getting the GB to work again, thus cats start eating, and avoiding the feeding tube process.

Her regimen?  Supplements containing beets and beet extract.  Same result for her own dog & his choleangiohepatitis.  All of his blood work went from being severe hepatic congestion to normal in 4 months. The cats I reference have had repeat US and all but one on the nutritional support have gone back to normal blood work AND ultrasound exam.  The one who has not now is eating, but the cholecystitis & sludgey CBD persist.

Anyone out there have any experience with this type of turn-around from purely nutrional changes?  The feline practitioner uses “Standard Process” supplement.

In this video sludge can be seen bubbling down into the cystic duct, along with cholecystitis.  However the cat is now eating & acting normal for her.

Thanks!

How much supplementation is
How much supplementation is given? Often by just eating the gall bladder will contract and therefore if the gall bladder is kept contracted and small this could account for the improvement. Doing a quick search it seems that beets are used in homeopathy to treat gall bladder disease in people.
Unfortunately the only way would be an evidence based prospective study.

I have had actigall do the
I have had actigall do the same thing in cats but used with primary triad tx mainly diet metro zithro and such. We have a feline biliary study going on right now that may shed more light on things but it likely depends largely on the viability of the Gb to contract. Its it fibrosed? Chronically dilated like a mucocele ?? or just sludgy? Lots of grey area here and is the cat eating better because the Gi and pancreas is better on the diet and the Gb is working better because they are eating and getting cholecystikinin release???

GB motility studies would help here i think.

in my experience its tough to find a pure GB cat as they almost all have triad disease and many with post hepatic obstriction from duodenal or pancreatic inflammation/fibrosis. pinched down d-pap’s so my though is the Gb is along for the ride in the process in cats (dogs another story) but a good sentinel organ just the same.

The great thing is that its working …so who cares as long as the cat is happy:)
