Case Study

Upper gastrointestinal linear foreign body with likely intussusception in a 10 month old MN Labrador Retriever

A 10-month-old NM Labrador was presented for evaluation of acute vomiting 24 hours. Physical examination, CBC, and serum biochemistry were all normal. Survey radiographs were suspicious for a foreign body.

Image Interpretation

A linear duodenal foreign body was noted in this patient with reactive surrounding mesentery and accordion pleating; appeared to extend to the proximal jejunum. Stomach was thickened, dilated with fluid. Intussusception appeared to be also present in the mid small intestine owing to the anchored portion of the foreign body with luminal shadowing. Stomach was thickened with minor amount of fluid accumulation. Hyperechoic linear structure was present in the stomach; suspect that the linear foreign body is anchored here; however, this could not be definitively identified.

DX

Upper gastrointestinal linear foreign body. Reactive mesentery.

Outcome

Exploratory of the stomach is recommended. Gastrotomy with multiple enterotomies would be necessary with emerging intussusception.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Acute gastritis – viral, bacterial, helminths, toxins, dietary indiscretion

Gastro-intestinal foreign body
