Thyroid mass, likely functional thyroid carcinoma, in a 13 year old FS Labrador Retriever with elevated T4

Case Study

Thyroid mass, likely functional thyroid carcinoma, in a 13 year old FS Labrador Retriever with elevated T4

A 13-year-old FS Labrador Retriever dog was presented for evaluation of elevated T4 (6.4).

A 13-year-old FS Labrador Retriever dog was presented for evaluation of elevated T4 (6.4).

DX

left thyroid mass, suspect functional thyroid carcinoma

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Left thyroid mass, highly vascular. Suspect functional thyroid carcinoma given the hyperthyroidism. Minor, regional inflammation was noted.

Image Interpretation

Thyroid mass measured approximately 2.0 x 1.5 cm and appears encapsulated. The mass was deriving from the caudal pole of the left thyroid lobe. The mass is highly vascular and strongly consistent with thyroid carcinoma. The right thyroid was unremarkable with 0.39 cm medial parathyroid. The right thyroid lobe measured 1.65 x 0.35 cm. Pericapsular inflammatory pattern was also noted in this patient around the mass. The mass appears encapsulated and resectable.

Outcome

Recommend surgical approach to left thyroidectomy. Three view chest radiographs and cranial mediastinal imaging as well as echocardiogram would be recommended. Blood pressure measurements would be warranted as well.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Thyroid – adenoma, carcinoma
Iatrogenic ingestion of thyroid medication
