Case Study

Stage C1 valvular disease with mitral valve prolapse and left sided congestive heart failure (CHF) in a 14 year old F mixed dog

The patient is a canine mixed breed, 14 year old, intact female. The patient has a cough and cardiomegaly on radiographs. The patient has a new grade V/VI heart murmur.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Mitral valve prolapse. Left sided congestive heart failure. Stage C1 valvular disease.

Image Interpretation

The cranial and caudal mitral valve leaflets demonstrated mildly vegetative contour with prolapse of the anterior leaflet.. End point to septal separation was within normal limits as the cranial leaflet came in contact or adequately close to the ventricular septum upon systolic motion. Left atrial and ventricular overload is present consistent with left sided congestive heart failure.

DX

Mitral valve prolapse. Left sided congestive heart failure. Stage C1 valvular disease.

Outcome

The patient was successfully treated with Lasix, Ace inhibitor and Pimobendan.
