This 9-year-old MN Golden Retriever was presented for anorexia, lethargy, and limping. The physical exam was normal except for solicited hip pain. The CBC demonstrated a mild leukocytosis with a left shift. Blood chemistry values were normal.

DX

Leiomysarcoma of the small intestine

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Small intestinal mural mass consistent with neoplasia, possibly epithelial in origin. List of differentials include focal inflammatory or granulomatous processes.

Image Interpretation

A hypoechoic, discretely marginated mass, which is continuous with the mucosal layer of the intestinal wall, is present within the far field in this segment of jejunum. The mass protrudes intra-luminally and is bordered by a fragmented gas pattern.

Outcome

The patient recovered uneventfully from surgery.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Pancreatitis, IBD, GI obstruction, neoplasia, infectious disease.

Sampling

On exploratory surgery, intestinal leiomyosarcoma was resected.
