A 12-year-old SF German Shorthaired Pointer dog was presented for evaluation of weight loss and poor appetite.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Mixed echoic mass in the cranial pole of the left kidney. Suspect hemangiosarcoma or similar. Abscessation is also possible.

Image Interpretation

The right kidney appeared largely normal with minor degenerative changes. The left kidney revealed a mixed echoic mass arising from the cranial pole which appeared to overlie the caudal aspect of the pancreatic limb adjacent to the spleen. A small amount of free fluid was noted between the kidney and mass. The patient was painful upon imaging of this region.
