Case Study

Renal lymphoma in a 10 year old MN DSH cat with renomegaly

A 10-year-old NM DSH was presented for evaluation of renomegaly. Urinalysis showed low SG (1.015) and proteinuria. Azotemia was present in the serum biochemistry.

DX

Renal lymphoma

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

These images are strongly suggestive for renal lymphoma or similar neoplasia.

Image Interpretation

The kidneys were bilaterally enlarged with cortical striations and loss of corticomedullary definition. Both kidneys presented subcapsular capping (thin hypoechoic line below renal capsule) with fluid accumulation or proliferative neoplastic tissue. The right kidney measured 6.7 cm. The left kidney measured 6.8 cm.

Outcome

None

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Bilateral renomegaly: lymphoma, hydronephrosis, pyelonephritis, peri-nephric cysts, polycystic kidney disease.

Sampling

Ultrasound-guided FNAs were performed of the kidneys. Renal aspirates revealed renal lymphoma.
