RAD – normal skeletal structures of 5th digit and surrounding structures subject to self trauma by a 6 year old MN Saint Bernard dog

 This 6 year old MN Saint Bernard dog presented with a 2-week history of acute licking of digit 5 of left front paw, limping on this paw. No trauma history.

Physical Exam: BCS 5/9. digit 5 red with moist dermatitis over nail/skin interface with some swelling of tissue. Toenail is intact. 2 week later on recheck toenail is discolored, with severe trauma of toe by patient with skin abraded and missing in some places. No discharge, minimal visible swelling externally.

Image Interpretation

Rads of left front limb – No abnormalities of the fifth digit are identified. There are mild degenerative changes
of the second, fourth, and fifth metacarpal–phalangeal joints. The remaining included
skeletal structures are normal.

DX

No abnormalities noted associated with the fifth digit

Outcome

The degenerative changes of the
metacarpal–phalangeal joints are considered incidental. Consider aspirate or biopsies of abnormal soft tissues.
