Case Study

RAD – normal age related bronchointerstitial lung pattern in a 6 year old MN Pitfall mixed dog

The patient is a 6 year old MN Pitbull mixed dog with a 3 year history of a mass on the right thorax; recent cytology consistent with mast cell tumor.

Physical exam – BAR; heart and lungs wnl; 12 x 8 mm raised, pink, hairless mass on caudal thorax

Image Interpretation

Lateral and DV views of the thorax – Osseous structures:
Moderate signs of spondylosis deformans are developed at the disc spaces T3/4 and T9
to T12.
The mass lesion at the chest wall reported in the history is not seen on the radiographs.
Intrathoracic structures:
The degree of lung inflation is fair.
The trachea, mediastinum and pleural space are within normal limits. There is no
evidence of mediastinal lymph node enlargement. The lung reveals a mild generalized
bronchointerstitial pattern. There is no evidence of interstitial lung nodules.
The cardiac silhouette is within normal limits for size and shape. The major heart
vessels and pulmonary vasculature are within normal limits.
Intraabdominal structures:
The serosal detail is maintained. The liver and stomach are within normal limits.

DX

Normal age related bronchointerstitial lung pattern

Outcome

There is no radiographic evidence of metastatic spread to the lung or
mediastinal lymph nodes.
Moderate multifocal spondyloses are developed throughout the thoracic spine and
likely to be an incidental finding at this stage.
