RAD – Chronic otitis and possible hyperparathyroidism and in a 12 year old FS DSH cat

Case Study

RAD – Chronic otitis and possible hyperparathyroidism and in a 12 year old FS DSH cat

This 12 year old FS DSH cat presented with painful mouth and anorexia of 3 days duration (full mouth extractions 2 years ago). R/O upper trachea mass.

This 12 year old FS DSH cat presented with painful mouth and anorexia of 3 days duration (full mouth extractions 2 years ago). R/O upper trachea mass.

Image Interpretation

The pictured cranial aspects of the lung parenchyma present increased radiopacity, this is due to the read-out algorithm. Mild spondylosis formation multifocal at the thoracic spine is noted.  The osseous lining of the tympanic bullae presents irregularity and mild thickening.  PosilbAll teeth are absent and the alveolar bone of the maxillae and mandibles presents moderate osteopenia.

DX

The radiographic findings are suspicious for secondary or tertiary hyperparathyroidism. The most common underlying cause in geriatric cats is chronic nephropathy.

Outcome

Screen for possible renal disease. Clinical palpation of the thyroid gland and T4 measurements may be considered as empirical screening for hyperthyroidism since this has a high incidence in geriatric cats and may mask chronic renal function loss artificially. The findings of the bullae are consistent with chronic otitis which may contribute to pain on opening the mouth
