Case Study

Parathyroid adenoma in a 8 year old FS Golden Retriever

Thie 8 year old FS Golden Retriever has a history of bilateral adrenal atrophy.

Thie 8 year old FS Golden Retriever has a history of bilateral adrenal atrophy.

Image Interpretation

The left thyroid in this patient revealed a focal, expansive hypoechoic nodule that measured 0.5 cm. This is strongly suggestive for adenoma and is localized at the mid level of the left thyroid lobe and is consistent with caudal parathyroid adenoma. This appears resectable. The nodule was confirmed in both short and long axis. The left thyroid appeared atrophied and mildly remodeled. Thyroid function should be evaluated in this patient long term. The right thyroid gland and right parathyroid region was unremarkable.

DX

Left parathyroid adenoma

Outcome

This is surgically resectable and appears isolated.
Recommend surgical intervention in this patient. There was no evidence of capsular
escape even though capsular dilation was noted. There was no evidence of infiltrative
disease in the region.
