Pancreatitis with regional lymphadenopathy in a 7 year old MN American Eskimo dog

Case Study

Pancreatitis with regional lymphadenopathy in a 7 year old MN American Eskimo dog

A 7-year-old NM American Eskimo dog was presented for evaluation of vomiting, diarrhea, inappetence, and abdominal pain. Pancreatitis was suspected on blood work due to elevated lipase and amylase. The dog had improved with medical intervention (anti-emetics, H2 blockers, pain meds, SQ fluids, and Flagyl) but colitis signs were still present.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

This is likely pancreatitis, with a potential for pancreatic carcinoma. The regional lymphadenopathy is likely reactive lymphadenitis with a potential for lymphoma, pancreatic carcinoma or metastatic disease.

Image Interpretation

The pancreas was prominent, irregular, and hypoechoic, primarily in the right pancreatic limb. Regional, midabdominal lymphadenopathy with surrounding reactive mesentery was also noted.

DX

Likely pancreatitis with the potential for pancreatic carcinoma.

Outcome

The patient is doing fine and is currently treated with Prednisone.

Comments

FNA sampling of the irregular areas of the pancreas as well as the lymph nodes would be recommended in order to rule out neoplasia.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Pancreatic disease (pancreatitis, neoplasia, abscessation), GI disease (IBD, partial obstruction or intussusception, neoplasia)

Sampling

None
