Pancreatic and small intestinal lymphoma in a 12 year old FS DLH cat

Case Study

Pancreatic and small intestinal lymphoma in a 12 year old FS DLH cat

A 12-year-old FS DLH was presented for anorexia, inappetance, and weight loss for one week. She has history of a previously diagnosed intestinal neoplasm. The patient’s physical examination revealed an unkempt hair coat, a low body score of 2, and palpable 1-2 cm mid and caudal abdominal tissue masses. CBC was within normal limits and blood chemistry showed mild hyperamylasemia. Radiographs showed no abnormalities.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

The previously diagnosed intestinal mass, mesenteric lymphadenopathy and possible pancreatic mass are all consistent with lymphoma.

Image Interpretation

Some of the small intestines were normal in appearance but there was a section of bowel that was obscured by a mural mass. The wall of the mass was hypoechoic and thickened (measuring 1.22cm) with complete loss of layering. This is consistent with the previously diagnosed intestinal neoplasm. Numerous enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes were visible as well (one measured 4.03 x 1.58cm). There was also a hypoechoic mass like area in the cranial abdomen, which is either consistent with previous pancreatic mass or an enlarged mesenteric lymph node.

DX

Small cell lymphoma

Outcome

The patient was treated with prednisolone and chlorambucil. The patient was found to be doing well one month later.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Neoplasia, pancreatitis, IBD, metabolic disease, maldigestion

Sampling

US-guided FNAs of both the pancreas and small intestine were completed. Cytology revealed small cell lymphoma.
