Ovarian remnant in a 3 year old FS Labrador Retriever with recurrent heat cycles

Case Study

Ovarian remnant in a 3 year old FS Labrador Retriever with recurrent heat cycles

A 3-year-old FS Labrador Retriever was presented for evaluation of recurrent estrous episodes. Owners noted vulvar swelling and discharge twice a year with prolonged heat cycles. Spay had been routine without any obvious complications.

A 3-year-old FS Labrador Retriever was presented for evaluation of recurrent estrous episodes. Owners noted vulvar swelling and discharge twice a year with prolonged heat cycles. Spay had been routine without any obvious complications.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

3.2 cm cystic right ovarian remnant. Prominent uterine stump. Potential low grade stump pyometra.

Image Interpretation

The uterine stump was prominent and measured 3.3 cm from the cervix. Potential adherence to the cystourethral junction may be present given that separation of the uterine stump from the cystourethral junction could be not be adequately performed on ultrasound. Therefore, at time of surgery ablation of the residual uterine stump would be recommended. The area of the left ovary did not reveal any residual ovarian tissue. The area of the right ovary revealed a 3.2 cm region of follicles with both cystic and solid echogenicities. This is consistent with an ovarian remnant with multiple heat cycles. No pericystic inflammation was noted.

DX

Ovarian remnant, right.

Outcome

The patient was recommended for removal of the right ovarian remnant and residual uterine stump ablation.

Comments

The patient was lost to follow up.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Ovarian and/or uterine remnant

Sampling

None taken.
