This 12 year old German Shepherd dog had surgery for compressive disc disese 3 months prior. Presented today with persistent weakness left hind limb, weak CP reflexes, increased stifle effusion and mild thickening, negative drawer.

Image Interpretation

Left stifle-
A large amount of anechoic effusion, marked synovial thickening and synovial proliferations are noted. The infrapatellar fat pad presents moderate heterogeneity.
A large amount of periarticular new bone is seen.
The cartilage layer of the femoral condyles presents marked thickening.
The cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) presents moderate thickening and irregularity with partial fibre disruption.
The position and morphology of the medial meniscus appear to be within normal limits.

right stifle –

The supra- an infrapatellar recess of the stifle joint contain a mild of anechoic joint fluid respectively. Mild synovial membrane thickening is noted.
Early periarticular osteophytes are seen.
The cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) presents within normal limits.
The medial meniscus is within normal limits.

DX

Partial rupture of the left cranial cruciate ligament with intact medial meniscus, DJD

Outcome

left stifle – Chronic degenerative and inflammatory joint disease with effusion and synovialitis as well as osteoarthritis
Cranial cruciate ligament pathology
Intact medial meniscus
The findings suggest partial rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament. There is a marked inflammatory component along with the degenerative changes.

Right stifle – early degenerative joint disease
