Case Study

ORTHO – Partial cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture with normal meniscus in a 5 year old Labrador Retriever

This 5 year old FS Labrador Retriever presented with left hind lameness

This 5 year old FS Labrador Retriever presented with left hind lameness

DX

The ultrasonographic examination of the left stifle joint reveals mild to moderate chronic degenerative joint disease with synovialitis, effusion and osteoarthritis. The findings are further compatible with partial rupture with biomechanial failure of the CCL.

Image Interpretation

Ultrasound of the left stifle –

A mild amount of osteophytes is seen at the periarticular margins. The infrapatellar fat pad presents an irregular echo pattern. Most of the  cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) fibres are continuous but with irregular thickness, echogenicity and delineation. The medial meniscus is ultrasonographically within normal limits.

Outcome

A meniscal pathology is not identified.
