Case Study

ORTHO – Normal contra stifle in a 7 year old Labrador Retriever with previous cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) repair

This 7 year old FS Labrador Retriever dog has a history of a surgically repaired left CCL tear. Assessment of right stifle today.

This 7 year old FS Labrador Retriever dog has a history of a surgically repaired left CCL tear. Assessment of right stifle today.

DX

There is no evidence of cranial cruciate or meniscal pathology in the right stifle joint.

Image Interpretation

Ultrasound of the right stifle –

There is mild anechoic effusion within the infrapatellar recess of the stifle joint along with thickening of the synovial lining. Emerging periarticular osteophytes are noted emphasizing the femorotibial joint and pole of the patella. The infrapatellar fat pad presents mild heterogeneity. The cranial and caudal cruciate ligament (CCL) are continuos and even in width. No periligamentous effusion is seen. The medial meniscus is in situ with even surface and uniform echogenicity.

Outcome

Mild chronic degenerative joint disease (DJD) with effusion, synovialitis and emerging osteophytosis is noted. The changes are unlikely to be of clinical significance at present. However progression of the DJD should be expected and commonly goes along with degeneration of the cranial cruciate ligament.
