ORTHO – Mild generalized degenerative joint disease (DJD) with synovialitis, effusion and osteophytosis in a 10 year old MN Papillon with lameness

Case Study

ORTHO – Mild generalized degenerative joint disease (DJD) with synovialitis, effusion and osteophytosis in a 10 year old MN Papillon with lameness

This 10 year old MN Papillon dog presented with right hind lameness, reluctance to rotate right hip or allow extension of hips. No cranial drawer.

This 10 year old MN Papillon dog presented with right hind lameness, reluctance to rotate right hip or allow extension of hips. No cranial drawer.

DX

The findings of the right stifle joint are compatible with mild generalized chronic degenerative joint disease (DJD) with mild synovialitis as well as mild joint effusion and mild osteophytosis.

Image Interpretation

Ultrasound of the stifles-

Left: no abnormalities

Right:

The supra- and infrapatellar recesses reveal mild synovial thickening as well as mild anechoic effusion. A mild amount of osteophytes is seen at the periarticular margins of the femoropatellar and femorotibial joint.  The cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) presents as a hypoechoic continuous band emerging from the tibial eminence. No periligamentous is seen. The infrapatellar fat body is uniform for echogenicity and echotexture.
The medial and lateral meniscus are in situ with uniform echogenicity and even surface.

Outcome

The ultrasonographic examination does not reveal reasons to pull the dog from activities as long as clinically sound. In the long term the DJD may lead to progredient degeneration of the CCL but at this point there is no evidence of relevant CCL pathology
