Case Study

ORTHO – generalized chronic degenerative joint disease (DJD) with marked synovialitis, mild joint effusion in a 5 year old FS Saint Bernard dog

This 5 year old FS St. Bernard dog presented with a history of a previously ruptured left CCL. Exam today to evaluate the right CCL

DX

Generalized chronic degenerative joint disease (DJD) with synovialitis, mild joint effusion and mild osteophytosis

Image Interpretation

ultrasound of the right stifle – Both the supra- and infrapatellar recess of the right stifle joint reveal marked synovial thickening as well as mild anechoic effusion.
A mild amount of osteophytes is seen at the periarticular margins of the femoropatellar and femorotibial joint.
The cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) is continuous and well delineated. Scant periligamentsou effusion is seen.
The infrapatellar fat body presents mild heterogeneity as found commonly in degenerative joint disease (DJD). The cranial and mid portion of the medial meniscus are well visible and in situ with even surface and uniform echogenicity.

Outcome

There is no evidence of cranial cruciate liagment failure at this point.
There is no evidence of medial meniscal injury.
