Case Study

ORTHO – Full rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) in a 11 year old MN Airdale with sudden lameness

This 11 year old MN Airdale has a history of osteoarthritis. Currently is lame on left hind. Positive cranial drawer.

This 11 year old MN Airdale has a history of osteoarthritis. Currently is lame on left hind. Positive cranial drawer.

DX

The findings of the left stifle joint are suggestive for biomechanical failure of cranial cruciate ligament owing to full rupture.

Image Interpretation

Ultrasound of the left stifle-

Minor synovial thickening of the suprapatellar recess is noted. The infrapatellar joint recess of the stifle joint presents mild effusion & moderate tickening of the synovial lining. A mild amount of periarticular osteophytes is noted. The infrapatellar fat pad reveals moderate heterogeneity and multifocal mineralization. The cranial and caudal cruciate ligament (CCL) presents as an echogenic stump of fibres attached to the intercondylar eminence of the tibia. Mild periligamentous effusion is seen.  The medial and lateral meniscus are in situ with even surface and uniform echogenicity.

Outcome

The degree of the chronic degenerative joint disease and synovialitis is mild to moderate.
