ORTHO – Degenerative joint disease (DJD) with mild synovitis and effusion in the stifle joint of a 8 year old FS Collie mix dog

Case Study

ORTHO – Degenerative joint disease (DJD) with mild synovitis and effusion in the stifle joint of a 8 year old FS Collie mix dog

This 8 year old FS Collie mix has a history of a CCL tear on the opposite stifle

This 8 year old FS Collie mix has a history of a CCL tear on the opposite stifle

DX

The findings of the stifle joint are compatible with emerging generalized degenerative joint disease (DJD) with mild synovitis and effusion.

Image Interpretation

Ultrasound of the stifle – Both the supra- and infrapatellar recess of the stifle joint reveal mild effusion and
synovial proliferation.
The cartilage layers as appreciated onto the femoral trochlea and the femoral condyles
are even and anechoic.
No osteophytes are seen.
The cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) presents as a thin continuous band and is even in
diameter and regular for echotexture.
The infrapatellar fat body presents mild heterogeneity as found commonly in
degenerative joint disease (DJD).
The medial meniscus is in situ. It presents with even and closed surface.

Outcome

There is no evidence of CCL or meniscal pathology at this point.
