ORTHO – Degenerative joint disease (DJD) and cranial cruciate (CCL) rupture in a 9 year old FS mixed dog

Case Study

ORTHO – Degenerative joint disease (DJD) and cranial cruciate (CCL) rupture in a 9 year old FS mixed dog

This 9 year old FS mixed canine had TTA surgery for ruptured CCL left stifle in Feb 2016. Now lame on right stifle.  PE: positive cranial drawer and CCT right stifle

DX

The findings of the left stifle joint are compatible with moderate generalized chronic degenerative joint disease with joint effusion, osteophytosis, capsular fibrosis and synovial proliferation. The findings are compatible with complete biomechanical failure of the cranial cruciate ligament even though a trace amount of fibres appear to be maintained.

Image Interpretation

Ultrasound of the right stifle –

The cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) presents as a short and broad echogenic fibre

stump at the intercondylar eminence of the tibia. A thin band of hypoechoic fibres can

be traced proximally between the femoral condyles. Mild periligamentous effusion and

marked irregular thickening of the synovial layer on the surface of the CCL is noted as

well.

The infrapatellar fat body presents heterogenous increase in echogenicity as found

commonly in chronic degenerative joint disease (DJD).

Outcome

No abnormalities of the menisci were seen.
