ORTHO – Chronic degenerative joint disease (DJD) with synovialitis, effusion and osteoarthritis with partial CCL rupture in a 5 year old FS Yorkie mix

Case Study

ORTHO – Chronic degenerative joint disease (DJD) with synovialitis, effusion and osteoarthritis with partial CCL rupture in a 5 year old FS Yorkie mix

This 5 year old FS Yorkie mix had CCL repair on left stifle; ultrasound of the right stifle today

This 5 year old FS Yorkie mix had CCL repair on left stifle; ultrasound of the right stifle today

DX

The ultrasonographic examination of the right stifle joint reveals mild to moderate chronic degenerative joint disease (DJD) with synovialitis, effusion and osteoarthritis. Partial rupture of the CCL

Image Interpretation

Ultrasound of the right stifle –

A moderate amount of osteophytes is seen at the periarticular margins emphasizing the femoropatellar joint. The infrapatellar fat pad presents with an irregular echo pattern.  Most of the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) fibres are continuous but with mildly irregular thickness and delineation. There is a mild amount of periligamentous effusion noted. The medial meniscus is ultrasonographically within normal limits

Outcome

Biomechanial failure is not likely at this point. However it is likely to develop with progressing DJD.
A meniscal pathology is not identified.
Clinical correlation is warranted to rule out patellar laxity/luxation syndrome.
