Moderate degenerative mitral valve disease in an 8 year old MN Cairn terrier mix

An 8-year-old MN Cairn terrier mixed breed presented for follow up echocardiography. The dog has been on pimobendan and benazepril therapy. Systolic BP was 150 mm Hg. Survey radiographs showed a normal cardiac silhouette, VHS of 10.5, mild left atrial enlargement; there was no signs of venous congestion, pulmonary edema, or tumors.

DX

Moderate DMVD causing moderate mitral insufficiency and mild left atrial enlargement

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

This is a case of moderate DMVD causing moderate mitral insufficiency and mild left atrial enlargement.

Image Interpretation

The left atrium is mildly enlarged. The mitral valve is thickened, causing moderate mitral insufficiency. The tricuspid valve shows mild degeneration and mild insufficiency.

Outcome

No additional medical therapy is indicated in this case.
