A 4-year-old MN Ferret was presented to an emergency facility for respiratory distress. Radiographs showed cardiomegaly. The patient was treated with Lasix and aminophylline and referred for an echocardiogram.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Normal heart. Pleural effusion is likely neoplastic. Numerous masses and enlarged lymph nodes in the thorax can be due to lymphoma/lymphosarcoma or other forms of neoplasia such as carcinoma or mesothelioma.

Image Interpretation

A moderate to large amount of echogenic / cellular pleural effusion was noted, as well as multiple masses and lymph node enlargement in the chest.

DX

Lymphoma.

Outcome

Supportive care was suggested, although it was noted that the patient was having significant difficulty breathing, which could deteriorate rapidly. The patient was treated with Lasix and prednisone. The patient was humanely euthanized at University of Pennsylvania shortly thereafter.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Cardiac failure, thoracic neoplasia (lymphoma, lymphosarcoma, LSA), pneumonitis.
